vivo Y12s review: Budget-friendly stunner

The vivo Y12s is one smartphone that will catch your interest from the get-go. The device has a stunning design—shiny pastel-hued cover, an ultra-slim frame, and a huge display. Like its predecessor, the vivo Y12, the Y12s looks like a premium smartphone, but is in fact affordably priced at P6,499.

Speed took the vivo Y12s for a spin to give you an idea of what it really has to offer beyond good looks.

Design

The Y12s’ design is above par for its price range. I like that it’s nearly bezel-free and that the front contains nothing but a punch-hole camera on the upper edge. This makes scrolling the wide screen and playing games more pleasurable.

We got the Glacier Blue variant, although the Y12s also comes in Phantom Black. This one is eye candy with its pastel blue cover that reflects subtle rainbows in certain angles.

The camera bump at the back is thin and negligible, while the volume rocker on the right side of the frame is easy to use. The fingerprint scanner below it (integrated with the power button) responds fast, unlocking the phone in less than a second.

The Y12s feels durable although it’s only 8.4mm thin and 191 grams light. But just to make sure, I recommend using a protective case. Aside from preventing physical damage, it will also keep the phone clear of fingerprint smudges because you’ll likely get many of that.

Display & multimedia

The Y12s boasts a 6.51-inch Halo FullView Display that features vibrant colors across still images and videos. It has an HD+ (1600×720) resolution with 270ppi density and 81.6% screen-to-body ratio. While the numbers are not striking, they are still sufficiently good on YouTube and Netflix. Brightness is 480 nits max and high enough to make the display visible even under sunlight.

For the best viewing and gaming experience, though, use your earphones where the audio is clear and rich. The quality of sound coming from the speaker, which is located on the upper edge of the phone, sounds muffled and isn’t loud enough even at high volume levels.

Camera

The good thing about the Y12s’ cameras is that they can instantly brighten any image. For those who love taking selfies, the 8-megapixel front camera will suit your liking. It has bokeh effect that makes the subject stand out from the background and look more alive. Its rear dual camera, meanwhile, has a 13-megapixel primary shooter and 2-megapixel depth sensor that can produce vibrant outdoor and indoor shots.

On the flip side, the intensity of its brightness can also make the images look over-filtered at times. It can be bothersome for people like me who want photos to appear as real as possible. When using the night mode, images tend to look gritty and noisy.

Performance

Under the hood, the vivo Y12s has an Android 10, Funtouch 11 OS powered by a MediaTek Helio P35 processor, and 3GB RAM+32GB storage. It performs certain tasks like scrolling through Facebook and Instagram with slight delay, but still fair enough for its low price.

The Y12s takes its performance up a notch when it comes to gaming. It delivers a nearly stutter-free experience on games, such as Mobile Legends and Subway Surfers, thanks to its Multi-Turbo 3.0 gaming mode that optimizes CPU and internal storage while you’re at play.

Speed tip: To ensure that you get the best gaming experience that Y12s can offer, don’t leave other apps running in the background, as it can cause recurring lags on your game.

The vivo Y12s features a staggering 5,000mAh battery that could last for almost two days with moderate use and up to 9 hours with intensive gameplay. However, it only supports up to 10W charging, which, based on my test, would only give you a mere 10% increase in power in a span of 30 minutes.

The battery is also equipped with 5V/1A reverse charging technology that turns the device into a mobile powerbank for your other devices.

Price

The vivo Y12s retails for P6,499 on the vivo website. For the price, the device is attractive, has a vivid display, and works well with streaming and gaming.

I would recommend it for anyone seeking a versatile smartphone intended for moderate use, and one that doesn’t carry a hefty price tag. With its chic and lightweight design, this phone is sure to delight students and young millennials who want to make every day a little more aesthetic.
