Toyota banks on electric vehicles for sustainable future

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) is concentrating efforts toward a sustainable future through educating the public on the shift from petrol engines to electric vehicles. Carving its own path for modern electrification, TMP’s aim is wider adoption of its Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) technology, which can be used in numerous industries and sectors.

Toyota has been developing its hybrid technology since the late 1990’s. It claims to be  the first car manufacturer to overcome the technical and engineering nuances that prevented the powertrain from being mass-produced. In 1997, the Toyota Prius was launched in Japan and the United States, makiung it the first-ever hybrid electric vehicle to be publicly available to consumers.

In June 2009, TMP brought to the Philippines the second generation Prius, a model then considered ahead of its time and beyond local market taste. Similar to its global counterpart, the Prius became a pioneer of hybrid electrification in the Philippines, offering motorists an alternative option. A hatchback Prius C model followed in 2012.

The Prius is known for its use of two power sources: a gas engine and an electric motor run by a self-charging battery.

“As the younger generation becomes more environment-conscious, we feel like it is the perfect time to educate them about eco-friendly technologies readily available to us,” TMP Vice President. Elijah Marcial said. In a similar vein, TMP First Vice President Cristina Arevalo said in a release that hybrid vehicles will be an initial step to a more sustainable future. Arevalo added that HEV’s are “undeniably” the smart and practical way to usher changine in the auto industry.

In keeping with its vision for sustainability, TMP is mounting efforts for the general public.

On May 29, 2019, a Toyota HEV Conference will be held with Toyota technical experts, key government officials, the academe, NGO representatives, and the press. The theme of the conference is “Toward Sustainable Mobility.”

The Prius and Prius C are available in all Toyota dealerships nationwide. In addition, Lexus also offers several hybrid models in its lineup.
