TECNO Mobile is on a roll! The smartphone brand has been launching new smartphones left and right and one of them is the promising budget midrange device: the Spark 7 Pro.

The TECNO Mobile Spark 7 Pro brings reliable specs to users at only P6,590 for the 4GB RAM + 128GB ROM configuration (P6,990 for 6GB + 64GB model). The phone comes with features for seamless online learning, work-at-home productivity, mobile gaming, and content creation and sharing.

We took the Spark 7 Pro for a spin to see how it holds up in everyday use.

Design & construction

The Spark 7 Pro has a trendy design. The back panel features two different finishes—a glossy sheen and an iridescent texture. However, what really gives this device a distinct look is the large rectangular camera module on the back. The protruded module features a triple camera setup, a four-LED array, and “Spark” and “AI” brandings.

Our review unit comes in Alps Blue colorway, which looks elegant and easy to match with any style. Other colors to choose from are Magnet Black, Spruce Green, and Neon Dream.

Display

The 6.6-inch IPS display boasts a 720 x 1600 HD+ resolution and 266ppi pixel density. Images and videos come out sharp and with good color accuracy. Text appear crisp on the bright screen. The blacks are not that deep but they’re acceptable.

TECNO Mobile also equipped the Spark 7 Pro’s screen with a 90Hz refresh rate. For gamers out there, this means that you can enjoy your favorite games without worrying about screen tears and lags.

A punch-hole notch (the company calls it “Dot-In”) sits on the upper left corner of the 20:9 display. This is something that goes unnoticed over time, so it’s a better design choice over having large bezels and notch.

Cameras

The TECNO Spark 7 Pro lets you capture creative moments with the triple camera module at the back. The rear camera includes a 48-megapixel main shooter, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and a dedicated AI camera.

Overall, this phone takes decent-quality images. The best output is when photos are taken under great lighting conditions. The colors look natural, and the images appear bright and detailed. There’s no dedicated macro mode, but the default AI camera mode accurately detects the subject conditions and adjusts the camera settings accordingly. When taking pictures of close-up subjects, say a flower, it provides good and natural foreground-background separation.

The Super Night mode ensures that images captured under a low light environment come out bright and with enough detail. However, the portrait mode on this phone needs more work. Although the photos come out bright and clear, the background blur looks a bit unnatural and sometimes overlays part of the subject.

The 8-megapixel front shooter takes great selfies. The beauty mode applies natural-looking touch-ups to photos under good lighting. The selfie camera has the same issue with the portrait mode featuring an unnatural blur around the subject.

Both the front and rear cameras are capable of capturing up to Full HD videos at 30fps. Like with the still images, video footages are bright, vibrant, and detailed under good lighting. Low-lit scenarios bring more noise to the clips.

You also get a lot of space to save large files, including photos and videos, with the 128GB onboard storage. If that’s not enough, there’s a dedicated slot in the SIM tray for a microSD card.

Performance

One of the features that TECNO Mobile is highlighting on the Spark 7 Pro is the 2GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio G80 chipset. Paired with a Mali-G52 GPU and 4GB RAM, the processor delivers power that can take on multiple daily computing tasks without a hitch. Playing mobile games is also possible. However, demanding apps must be set to the minimum graphics settings to avoid lags while playing.

Powering this phone is a massive 5000mAh Li-Po battery. You get up to a day of non-stop heavy use and even more than two days of battery life for casual users. Put the phone on standby (Wi-Fi turned on) after charging it to 100% and you still get around 60% battery power left after three days.

The Spark 7 Pro already runs Android 11 out of the box. There are several pre-installed bloatware, but they can easily be removed to make space for your must-have apps. It comes with features such as App Twin, which allows you to split the screen and run two apps at the same time. Meanwhile, the Auto Dark Theme applies the Dark Mode on apps from the Settings.

Speed says

The TECNO Mobile Spark 7 Pro gives other midrange phones in the sub-P7,000 category a run for their money. For its price, this device already offers above-average specs and features. The Spark 7 Pro offers style, functionality, and a great mobile experience to users who are on a budget.
