Squid Game fans are just getting started counting the days to Season 2, but the show’s writer and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, is back with yet another exciting news: Squid Game is likely to get a third chapter.

Hwang revealed this in an online interview with South Korean broadcaster KBS held on Tuesday, December 28. He said, “I’m currently in the midst of discussions with Netflix about Season 2 and Season 3 [of Squid Game].”

“I think we’ll be reaching some sort of conclusion [to our discussions] soon,” continued the director. “We know that many people are waiting, so everyone is working hard to prepare for the next season with a positive outlook.”

Hwang’s announcement comes almost two months after he confirmed Squid Game season 2 in an interview with AP News. Hwang said that although he was still in the planning process at that time, he promises fans that “Gi-hun will be back” to “do something for the world.”

To recap, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is Squid Game’s main protagonist who, along with 455 other cash-strapped individuals, were invited to play in a deadly competition for a cash prize of ₩45.6 billion (approximately P2 billion).

Just last Tuesday, the director hinted that he now has the storyline of Season 2 blueprinted. “The focus [of the season] will be the story of Seong Gi Hun unraveling [the mysteries of the organization behind the game],” he told KBS. “The overarching plotline of Season 2 will be the story of the people that Gi Hun meets and the people he chases after.”

According to a report by Soompi, Netflix confirmed later that day that they are indeed “discussing a wide variety of possibilities for Squid Game, including the production of a Season 3.”

The streaming giant noted, though, that “nothing has yet been set in stone.”
