Sakura Wars set to hit PS4 on April 28

It’s the latest in a long-running series dating back to 1996, when it launched on Sega Saturn.

It’s been a long time since we last received a new entry in the Sakura Wars series (the last one being Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love in 2005), but apparently SEGA wants to revive it for today’s consoles.

And why not? For starters, it ticks all the right boxes for gamers inclined toward Japanese-flavored titles, blending gameplay mechanics of tactical strategy role-playing game, dating simulator, and visual novel genres with an interesting overarching narrative involving steampunk mecha, demonic forces, and historical fiction.

While systems from previous games in the series return with some enhancements in tow, a new action-based combat system enters the fray trading out the old tile-based battles for something a bit more real-time. This adds some new layers of depth to the mecha-fighting action for Sakura Wars fans old and new.

Sakura Wars, developed and published by SEGA for the PlayStation4, is set to be released on April 28.
