First Look: Huawei Y7 Pro 2019

Following the freshly introduced Y6 Pro 2019 is another shaker in the entry-level category—the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019.

Like its sibling from Huawei’s Y series, the Y7 Pro 2019 packs a contemporary form factor and cool features that don’t come with a hefty price tag.

Eye-catching design

A noticeably similar feature to the Y6 Pro 2019 is the dewdrop notch design. It houses the 16MP selfie camera, and directly above it is the LED notification light and call speaker.

The Y7 Pro 2019 has a bigger screen than the Y6 Pro 2019. It’s 6.26 inches large at 19:9 HD+ and 1520 x 720px resolution. It most likely won’t be able to support 1080p videos, but it should be good enough for casual video viewing or even gaming. I have yet to try streaming a movie on the Y7 Pro 2019, but so far upon first look, the screen offers punchy colors and sharp images on photos.

Our review unit came in Midnight Black, but it’s also available in Huawei’s iconic Aurora Blue colorway. The polycarbonate backing feels durable and Huawei says it’s scratch-resistant, too, but they threw in a protective jelly case in the box for safety.

Better pictures?

The Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 features a vertically stacked dual camera setup. It includes a 13MP main and 2MP secondary shooter. Backed by AI, it can recognize up to 22 object categories and produce good quality images in different settings. Huawei claims that it can capture 50 percent more light in nighttime photographs, compared to similar models.

Available modes for the rear camera include Aperture, Beauty, Photo, Video, Pro, Panorama, AR lens, HDR, Filter, Watermark, and Download. All of these we’re excited to try.

User-friendly OS

Running on EMUI 8.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo, the Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 is easy to use regardless if you’ve used a Huawei phone before. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 octa-core SoC that can deliver better battery efficiency.

It also runs with an Adreno 506 GPU with Vulkan support and a 3GB RAM. It’s equipped with a 32GB internal storage expandable up to 512GB via microSD.

Gamers will also be delighted to know that it features an improved Do Not Disturb Mode that can route calls to a secondary SIM when you’re in the heat of a game.

The Huawei Y7 Pro 2019 is currently available for pre-order at Lazada until February 22 for only P9,990.
