Nintendo has announced that Pokémon’s first open-world RPG Pokémon Legends: Arceus is coming to Switch on January 28, 2022.
First announced in February this year, Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes a huge shift from the franchise’s conventional role playing games, which are set in similarly structured regions that have gyms, Pokémon Leagues, as well as organized competitions.
The upcoming game will instead bring players back to a much older era of the Sinnoh region where anything you’ve played before in Pokemon history still didn’t exist. “All around, you’ll find Pokémon living wild in harsh environments unlike the region you may remember from the days of the Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearlgames,” Nintendo says on its website.
Each player would have to catch, survey, and research wild Pokémon to create and complete the region’s first Pokédex. To catch these Pokémon, trainers would have to use Poké Balls of the olden times—ones that are made mostly of wood and puff off steam from their tops when Pokémon are caught.
Nintendo says that Pokémon Legends: Arceus is another main entry in the series, after the last Pokémon Sword and Shield. It will, however, feature a more seamless gameplay than the series’ previous titles.
