The nominations for the coveted 2020 Academy Awards are in and Hollywood is a buzzin’! Blockbuster hit Joker leads the Oscars race with 11 nominations, including best picture, best director, and best actor. The film becomes the second comic book-based movie to receive a best picture nomination after Black Panther in 2019.
The Irishman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and 1917 follow with 10 nominations each. These films are also nominated for Best Picture along with Ford v Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, and Parasite.
Korean thriller Parasite makes history this year, being the first South Korean film to receive an Oscar nomination. The film scored a total of six nods, including best international film, best director, best original screenplay, best film editing, and best production design.
Fan favorite Avengers: Endgame picks up a nomination for visual effects alongside Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The latter received nominations for its original score, sound editing, and mixing.
The biggest snubs
Like last year, female directors were snubbed from the race. Notably absent in the list of nominees for best director are Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), and Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers). Moreover, only one person of color, Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), is nominated across all acting categories.
Also, Frozen II failed to pick up a nod for best animated feature even after it became one of the highest-grossing animated film of all time. However, its soundtrack headliner, Into the Unknown, scored a nomination.
The 92nd Academy Awards will air on February 9.
