OPPO Reno6 Z 5G review: Charming vlogging companion

OPPO is once again making a strong case for head-turning, revved-up smartphones, with the launch of the OPPO Reno6 Z 5G. It is the latest addition to OPPO’s Reno Series, alongside the Reno6 5G, launched earlier this August.

One look and you’d know that it is one of OPPO’s most (if not the most) attractive phones by far, as it bears the series’ unique Reno Glow effect. It is the ideal vlogging companion for today’s young smartphone users because, on top of its good looks, the Reno6 Z 5G is packed with a more powerful chipset, bigger battery, and enhanced camera features than its predecessor, the Reno5 5G.

Fun, youthful design and vibrant display

The OPPO Reno6 Z 5G’s design is clearly one of the device’s best bits, as seen on the Aurora variant we reviewed. It is spruced up with the brand’s unique Reno Glow effect, just like the device’s Stellar Black variant. The one at hand, though, gives off sweet summer-like vibes, as it casts out blue, green, pink, orange, and yellow pastels in different angles and under different lights.

On the upper left corner of the back panel is the thin camera bump that houses three shooters—64MP main + 8MP wide + 2MP micro—and an LED flash.

The device is eye candy in all ways. Besides having an aesthetic plastic panel, the Reno6 Z 5G is lightweight at only 173 grams and 7.97 mm thin. That, combined with the device’s glossy round edges, makes the phone extra comfortable to use even for a long period of time.

It’s sleek but still feels sturdy. You can probably do away with the clear jelly case that comes with the box. You don’t have to worry about tainting the Reno6 Z 5G’s pretty cover, too. It has a glossy finish mixed with some grainy matte feel, which makes it almost free of fingerprint smudges as you use the device throughout the day.

The Reno6 Z 5G features a 6.4-inch AMOLED display that delivers sharp images, vibrant colors, and deep blacks, thanks to its 2400 x 1800 FHD+ resolution.

Although the device only has the standard 60Hz refresh rate, it lets you browse through the phone and view multimedia content without flicker. Its 90.8% screen-to-body ratio, plus thin bezels, made it easy for us to binge-watch The Good Doctor and play Need for Speed on landscape mode for hours.

This AMOLED display is also built with a responsive on-screen fingerprint scanner and brightness that peaks at 800 nits so you can still see everything vividly even under sunlight.

When it comes to audio, the Reno6 Z 5G produces clear and crisp sound with its single-firing speaker at the bottom. It may not have the loudest output, but it is still immersive. Better yet, use the pair of wired earphones that OPPO included in the unit’s box.

Innovative vlogging camera

Apart from its enchanting design, the Reno6 Z 5G prides itself in its camera’s features, which OPPO claims can provide users with professional-grade photos and videos right at their fingertips. Our review of the device has revealed that indeed, it is an ace in this department.

The Reno6 Z 5G has a triple camera setup, which consists of a 64MP main, 8MP wide, and 2MP macro lenses. It is similar to the Reno5 5G’s quad-camera setup, only that the Reno6 Z 5G doesn’t have the Reno5’s 2MP mono shooter. No biggie, though, since the Reno6 Z 5G has filters that produce equally stunning black-and-white photos.

Photos come out sharp and vibrant in auto mode. Extra HD mode creates photos that are extra sharp with a bit higher exposure. On the flip side, images tend to turn out grainy, and lack vibrance when you’re shooting using the night mode. For that, we recommend sticking to the auto mode; it will give you better results.

Night mode

Same as the Reno5 5G, the Reno6 Z 5G sports a 32MP front-facing camera enhanced with beautification tools, such as the A.I. Color Portrait and the Bokeh Flare Portrait, which removes skin imperfections while preserving your natural features. And it works just the same even if you’re taking selfies indoors with sparse lighting.

As for videos, both the Reno6 Z 5G’s rear and front cameras capture clips with clarity, vibrancy, and clear audio. The rear supports up to 4K @ 30fps, while the front can shoot up to 1080p @ 30fps. Apart from the feature called Portrait Beautification Video, vloggers will surely find the Dual-view Video mode helpful when you want to record videos from the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

Seamless performance

The Reno6 Z 5G is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 800U 5G processor supported by 8GB of RAM and 128GB expandable storage. It runs the Android 11-based ColorOS 11.1 seamlessly and without any lag. The interface is responsive, clean, and packed with useful features, including the Phone Manager virus remover and phone cleaner, the O Relax app where you can play soothing sounds and mini-games to relieve anxiety, and a calculator with built-in exchange rate and metric units converters.

Playing games on the Reno6 Z 5G is likewise smooth and satisfying. We experienced zero to minimal lags while playing Need for Speed: No Limits and Subway Surfers with other apps running in the background. Gaming is further boosted with the device’s Game Space app, which lets you toggle between different modes of play and lets you shut notifications completely while playing.

OPPO beefed up the Reno6 Z 5G with a 4,310mAh battery, which is a huge step up from the Reno5 5G’s 2,150mAh. But on the contrary (and for some reason), the manufacturer downgraded the device’s VOOC flash charger from 60W to a mere 30W.

Good thing is that it can still fully charge the device in just an hour, with the battery lasting for two days of moderate gaming, social media browsing, and Netflix streaming.

Speed says

The OPPO Reno6 Z 5G is a trusty, not to mention attractive device for users who enjoy expressing themselves through compelling content. For one, the Reno6 Z 5G has AI-enhanced cameras that generate photos and videos that are ultra-clear and vibrant. Its features, specifically the unique Dual-view video, allow users to produce innovative content easily and quickly. The device’s ability to run multiple apps and games without lags is added advantage. Priced at P19,990, the Reno6 Z 5G is an ideal vlogging companion out to give you the best bang for your buck.
