For smartphone manufacturers, maximizing screen surface-to size ratio is the name of the game, hence the notches, punch-holes, and pop-up mechanisms. OPPO has a new, interesting take: side-mounted pop-up cameras.
A patent filing found in the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) database, gives us a first look at this sideways pop-out front camera.
In the reference images, there’s a motorized camera module on the right-hand side of the phone. It sits flush with the back when not in use.
The power button is located on the same side while the volume rockers and SIM card tray are on the left. The speaker and USB-C connectors are at the bottom.
As usual, whether this idea will ever make it into an actual production device or not remains to be seen.
