‘Red Notice’ is the closest Marvel-DC crossover we can get so far — here’s what the cast has to say

Just when you thought watching a Marvel-DC crossover film is merely a dream for avid fans of the comics, Netflix drops the mystery-comedy movie Red Notice, which offers a feel of having Deadpool, Wonder Woman, and Black Adam, together on one screen.

To set things straight, Red Notice doesn’t actually feature the super-powered beings. Still, a film headlined by Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne Johnson, who have all been playing the iconic characters, can pass as the crossover we’ve been waiting for — at least for now.

In fact, a Twitter user who goes by the name Salman Artworks previously shared a cool edit of the film’s photo where all three actors were made to wear the costumes of their respective superheroes.

Red Notice premiered in US theaters on November 5 and on Netflix on November 12. It chronicles the adventures of FBI profiler John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) as he tracks down art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds), who is trying to steal three ancient Egyptian eggs supposedly given to Cleopatra. Their rivalry later turns into an alliance to catch another crook—The Bishop (Gal Gadot)—who is always one step ahead of them.

Throughout the film, the trio goes on an action-packed chase across prison cells in Russia, masked balls, Argentinian jungles, and surprising betrayals, which all reveal that not everyone is who they seem to be.

As the photo above and the film give fans major Marvel-DC vibes, Ryan affirmed during the Red Notice’s virtual press con that what sets the film apart from other heist movies is his team-up with Dwayne and Gal.

I think it’s the trio, you know. I think that’s what sets Red Notice apart,” Ryan told Speed and other members of the press during the conference held via Zoom on November 5.

He explained, “It’s very hard to get the three main stars of the movie — myself, Dwayne and Gal — in a room together, let alone in a whole movie together. And you leave it to Netflix to figure out some way to do it. I mean, they’re so innovative over there, and they figured out how to master some pretty wildly complex scheduling… getting three personalities like that in one feature film is a challenge. And they did it.”

The Deadpool star also revealed that although he’s been friends with Dwayne for 20 years, he, too, can’t help but geek out with the idea of him working alongside his co-stars in the film.

“You know, it’s always interesting working with larger-than-life personalities like this and you never know how it’s going to go. Thankfully, we all knew each other. There wasn’t any of that concern,” Ryan said.

“But you know, I’m also a fan of film and of movie stars. And, you know, people don’t realize that just because I work in this genre or in this industry where I’ve been for almost 30 years now, I still get excited and geeked out,” he continued.

You know, when Dwayne or Gal walks in the room, my first instinct is [to think]… ‘Oh my god, that’s Gal Gadot and that’s Dwayne The Rock Johnson just walking in a room right now.’ So I get a little sort of starstruck just like everybody else.”

For Dwayne, the movie’s premise, in addition to working with Ryan and Gal, is what makes Red Notice an equally “ambitious” film as any superhero movie.

“You know, we wanted to make a great movie. And I think a lot of times with something like this, the content of the script really will dictate, a lot of times what the set is going to feel like. And so the movie is big. It’s fun, it’s ambitious, as Gal has said, with some twists and turns and surprises,” he said during the press con.

Dwayne, who also serves as the movie’s producer, added that while the pandemic hampered their production, it did not dishearten them to give it their all.

“We had a great time,” he continued. “We also had to buckle down because we shot it during COVID, so that was very challenging. But we all rallied together, including our crew of about a thousand crew members, and we made the best movie we could.”

He also noted that it was this deep intention that makes the action sequences in Red Notice different from any other film.

“We really intend to try our best to raise the bar with our action sequences. We are all no stranger to action — from Gal, with everything she’s done in her career, [as well as] myself and Ryan. To try and raise the bar in action sequences is not easy to do. It’s challenging. It’s difficult because there’s a lot of great action out there and a lot of great action storytelling,” the actor-producer said.

“So it was our intention, I think, that really separates us, [and also the intention] to try to thread the needle of great action with a little bit of levity in every piece of the action. That’s why you’ll see in our movie as heightened as an intense as our action sequences are, there’s a lot of great comedy and a lot of style, that it looks beautiful,” Dwayne added.

Gal, meanwhile, said that Red Notice’s writer and director Rawson Marshall played a huge role in her decision to take on the project.

Rawson is best known for directing the 2018 action-thriller Skyscraper and a string of comedy films, including Easy A, We’re The Millers, and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.

The Wonder Woman star said, “I think that Rawson did an amazing job writing the script and directing this movie. I think that he really managed to re-engineer this type of heist movies, you know. There’s so much to it. He managed to make it on its own as much as he got inspiration from different movies from the past.”

“I think that, like DJ said, the twists and turns are super smart and strong,” she continued. “I think that the wit and the funny moments are very, you know, they’re fun. And the boys are in the movie, so what else can one ask for?”
