Netflix has announced that its new K-drama The Silent Sea is premiering on December 24.
Set in the year 2075, this sci-fi thriller tells the story of an elite space team sent on a special mission to an abandoned research base on the moon to save Earth from natural resource depletion.
Leading the cast is Hallyu superstar Gong Yoo, who plays team leader Han Yoon-Jae that is tasked to secure a sample from the space station, which could be the key to humankind’s survival.
Meanwhile, the show’s poster features astrobiologist Song Jian (Bae Doona), another member of the team, who, according to Soompi, aims to uncover the truth behind the accident that had led to the abandonment of the space station. Joining the two stars is Lee Joon, who plays the talented engineer Ryu Tae Seok.
While looking for clues to save Earth, team members become mired in mysterious predicaments and unforeseen events that occur in outer space. Their fates, hanging by a thread, will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
The Silent Sea is a series based on director Choi Hang-yong’s short film by the same name, which received much acclaim at the 13th Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival in 2014.
It is produced by actor Jung Woo-sung, who was enthralled by this story that Choi has been crafting for over a decade. “I loved the spectacular ideas behind the story. I wanted to be involved in creating a sci-fi series that is uniquely Korean,” Jung said.
Also joining the show’s production is writer Park Eun-kyo, who received Best Screenplay awards at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards for Mother and at the Blue Dragon Awards for Crush And Blush.
With the synergy and the intense suspense the entire production team creates, The Silent Sea is poised to become the grand finale of Korean films and series this 2021.
