Top Japanese anime studio Toei Animation has announced that a new “Dragon Ball Super” movie is hitting the big screen in 2022.
The upcoming film is based on the Dragon Ball Super manga and anime series released in 2015. It is the second film adaptation of the series, next to Dragon Ball Super: Broly that earned a whopping $120 million worldwide during its premiere in 2018.
The planning for the upcoming movie began as early as 2018, even before the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Similar to that film, Akira Toriyama will “heavily lead” the screenplay, dialogue, and character design of the new movie.
While all other deets are yet to be revealed, Toriyama assured fans of another “amazing ride” in the new 2022 film. “I really shouldn’t talk too much about the plot yet, but be prepared for some extreme and entertaining bouts, which may feature an unexpected character. We’ll be charting through some unexplored territory in terms of the visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride, so I hope everybody will look forward to the new movie!” Toriyama wrote in a statement.
Dragon Ball made its debut in the magazine Shueisha‘s Weekly Shonen Jump in 1984 and has become one of the most successful manga and anime series of all time. The manga sold over 160 million copies in Japan and more than 250 million copies worldwide. The anime, particularly Dragon Ball Z, is also deemed one of the most influential in boosting the popularity of Japanese animation in Western culture.
