Marvel is bringing a new martial arts hero to its cinematic universe with the upcoming film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The first trailer of the film dropped Monday, April 19. It introduces Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) as Marvel’s supreme master of martial arts, who made his first appearance in comic books way back 1973.
Based on the most recent series of Shang-Chi comics, the upcoming movie will feature the title character in high-flying martial arts action as he battles with the mysterious Ten Rings organization and its true leader, the Mandarin.
According to The Verge, the Ten Rings have been a figure lurking in the background for the entirety of the MCU, first introduced in 2008’s Iron Man and spoofed by a copy-cat group in Iron Man 3. Shang-Chi now promises to reveal the actual group for the first time.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film will also feature star Awkwafina (Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians) as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy and Tony Leung Chiu-wai as the Mandarin.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is also set to mark Marvel’s return to theater-only releases. It will debut exclusively in cinemas on September 3.
