JBL Flip 5 review: Keep the party going

JBL Flip 5

JBL wants to keep the audio fun going with its 5th-generation Flip portable waterproof speakers. The JBL Flip 5 brings freshly engineered drivers and better battery life to music lovers looking for a reliable party companion. But is that enough to get everyone to join the epic rave?

The signature sleek body of the Flip series remains trendy. It is available in a wide range of colors to match whatever your personal style is; our review unit comes in a lovely Dusty Pink hue, which looks elegant and stylish. The big buttons—power key and playback controls—are a little hard to press, however. Aside from the signature waterproof design (It’s IPX7-rated!), the Flip 5 can also handle the occasional drops and dings thanks to its rubber housing.

In terms of audio quality, the Flip 5 offers crisp sound with a nice deep bass. Acoustic ballads come out clean, while bass-heavy songs have the right level of intensity to bring the music to life. Even at higher volumes, the sound remains clear and undistorted. If you want better soundstage, though, you can make use of the PartyBoost feature, wherein you can pair the Flip 5 to multiple compatible speakers in order to create a bigger sound.

Another improvement from the previous Flip iteration is the battery life. On a full charge, the device can last a day of continuous music streaming. Its auto-power off feature also helps in saving battery, especially when you tend to forget to turn of the device after use. Plus, it only takes a little over two hours to charge this speaker from zero to one hundred.

Another notable feature on the JBL Flip 5 is the built-in speakerphone. You can now take calls from the speaker with a touch of a button; no need to switch to and from your smartphone to do so. The calls are clear from your end, however, the clarity on the other side of the line depends on how far you are talking from the speaker.
