Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro review: Function meets finesse

At a time where most of us spend our days at home, a watch isn’t that necessary. But a week with the Huawei GT 2 Pro has proven me wrong and I can’t get enough of this smartwatch. I had a chock-full of handy features right on my wrist plus panache to go with it.

Good looks, good feel

There’s no doubt about it, this is one premium watch. I’ve always been a fan of bigger timepieces and that is what the Watch GT 2 Pro is. That it looks classy—thanks to its build and titanium body—is just icing on the cake. With this watch on, you can take any outfit (like a t-shirt and jeans) to the next level. It’s definitely a great pick if you want to look effortlessly chic without really putting too much effort into your look.

You can make the watch’s face adapt to your style, too, with the Huawei Health app. There are numerous faces to choose from for every occasion—from fun, casual looks to more sophisticated and elegant styles.

The watch is on the heavier side at 52g but after a few days of wearing it, you’ll barely notice the heft. It’s pretty comfortable to wear with its smooth ceramic backing. I did find myself taking off the watch because I found it uncomfortable to wear when it’s wet, like after washing my hands or working out. So my tip: wipe and dry off the backing.

The 1.39-inch OLED display is pretty bright and vibrant, even outdoors. It has an auto-brightness feature that can sometimes change up the nits too much while indoors. Touch on the display is pretty intuitive, too.

Tougher than it looks

One thing I worry about with a screen of this size is scratching it, but the Watch GT 2 Pro is protected by a durable sapphire glass, which is pretty tough. I’ve accidentally bumped it on doors and table edges, but I haven’t seen any scratches.

This smartwatch has a speaker built into it. Although it’s handy for answering calls even while my phone wasn’t on my person, I worry about getting water in it since it is a pretty sizeable hole. But Huawei thought about this and in one of the Watch GT 2 Pro’s latest firmware updates, a Drain feature was introduced to get rid of the splashes.

Admittedly, I haven’t been able to utilize this watch’s fitness function as I’m stuck indoors and most of its sports modes are for outdoors like golfing, hiking, swimming, and more. It does support indoor workouts like walking, running, cycling, free training, and more.

Smarter than most

As for its health functions, the device shows me my heart rate, stress levels, sleep records, and blood oxygen level. More descriptive details on these functions can be seen through the Huawei Health app.

This watch lets you play music, which is perfect if you want time away from your phone but need tunes playing in the background. In addition, it pairs with TWS earbuds, which is handy if you want to answer calls and play music right within this watch. What I do wish this watch had is the ability to interact with notifications, like sending quick replies. Sadly, you also can’t add music to the watch unless you’re using an Android phone.

I’ve been using this watch with the health features turned on 24/7 and it lasts me up to seven days, which is pretty long for a smartwatch. It’s less than Huawei’s promised 10-14 days, but the watch’s battery can last that long with some of the intensive functions turned off.

This watch comes with a wireless charging cradle out of the box, but it works with other wireless Qi chargers as well. Charging to full can take over an hour.

Speed says

The Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro definitely has an elegant flair to it—but mind you, its beauty isn’t only skin-deep. It’s got an array of smart features and long battery life to match.

You can shop for this smartwatch through the Huawei Store for P11,999.
