Huawei uses AI to detect COVID-19 in seconds

Huawei Cloud AI-assisted diagnosis COVID-19

Huawei Technologies Phils. Inc launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted Diagnosis for the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The innovation is part of Huawei’s Cloud Technology program, and utilizes Huawei CLOUD and Huawei AI technologies.

To develop the AI-assisted quantitative medical image analysis service for COVID-19, Huawei CLOUD worked with Huazhong University of Science & Technology and Lanwon Technology. The service can automatically, quickly, and correctly output CT quantification results to imaging and clinical doctors.

Last February 4, 2020, the National Health Commission of China has included CT features of COVID-19 as the clinical diagnosis standard for COVID-19 in Hubei Province. As one of the decision-making methods for COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment, CT powers fast and effective diagnosis and evaluation.

This new innovation from Huawei can greatly help in mitigating the shortage of imaging doctors who can accurately diagnose COVID-19. Moreover, the medical frontliners will be relieved of the pressures of quarantines and will have reduced heavy workloads.

Among the Huawei CLOUD technologies used in order to make this project possible are computer vision and medical analysis. Additionally, the service utilizes Huawei Ascend series AI chips to output the quantification result of a single case in seconds.

According to Mr. Guo Zhi, Huawei Philippines Vice President, the company is offering the service for free for hospitals in the Philippines designated as Covid19 facilities.

“We want to make the technology accessible. This is part of our Corporate Social Responsibility Program,” he said.

The combination of AI and doctor review is greatly faster than manual quantitative image evaluation, which greatly improves the diagnosis efficiency.
