Huawei makes HarmonyOS official

After tumultuous months early this year, news about Huawei’s own OS replacing Android surfaced. Now, the tech company has officially announced its HarmonyOS at the Huawei Developer Conference 2019.

As an answer to Android, this OS is designed to work on devices such as tablets, phones, smartwatches, and even cars.

This operating system is the same as the rumored Hongmeng OS reported in May. The new HarmonyOS is open-source, which means means it can be adopted by third-party manufacturers who want to ensure their Internet of Things devices can talk to others. HarmonyOS is also said to be safer and faster than Android.

Huawei CEO Richard Yu said that HarmonyOS is “completely different from Android and iOS. You can develop your apps once, then flexibly deploy them across a range of different devices.”

The OS will launch later this year, with its initial market in China.
