Huawei’s previous FreeBuds 3 fell short in terms of active noise cancellation (ANC) due to the open-fit design of the earbuds. The tech brand hopes to solve this with its newest TWS earbuds, the FreeBuds Pro.
Like its name suggests, the FreeBuds Pro gets upgrades that make it worthy of the flagship moniker. The buds now feature Intelligent Dynamic ANC technology, wherein it recognizes ambient sounds to switch between noise cancellation modes. All in all, there are three settings: noise-canceling, awareness, and off.
Other specs include 11mm dynamic drivers, Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity, 3-mic systems on each bud for ANC, and bone sensor for wear detection.
Inside the Huawei FreeBuds’ box, you’ll find the charging case with the FreeBuds Pro in it, a USB-C charging cable, silicone ear tips, and some documents. The buds’ ear tips come in three different sizes, and you can even do an ear fit test once you’ve connected the buds to your phone.
Somehow, the FreeBuds Pro are a lot like Apple’s AirPods Pro, just a bit bigger in size. The buds take on a completely different shape compared to the AirPods, but there’s no denying aesthetic similarities. Our test unit came in Ceramic White, which really looks a lot like the AirPods Pro. However, these buds are also available in two other colors: Silver Frost and Carbon Black.
Once you open the charging case, the FreeBuds Pro will automatically connect to your device. On Huawei phones, it even shows a cool animation with each bud’s battery life. When you take them out of the case and wear them, you’ll hear a tone indicating that the buds are on. With the wear sensor activated, the buds will automatically pause your audio when you take an earbud out.
The FreeBuds Pro features squared off stems that provide users with the ability to pause/play their music by pressing on them. You can also swipe on the stems to change the volume of the media you’re playing. Meanwhile, holding the stems allows you to change between listening modes. There’s a voice that will tell you which mode you’re in so you won’t have to check your phone.
These buds, paired with a Huawei phone, offers multiple functionalities through the Huawei AI Life app. There you can change noise control, customize shortcuts for controls, toggle wear detection, and test ear tip fit.
Sound-wise, these earbuds are pretty good. They provide a more solid sound with punchy bass. They’re also comfortable to wear for several hours.
In terms of battery life, Huawei says the FreeBuds Pro should last for five hours with ANC enabled, with the charging case adding an additional 22 hours.
The Huawei FreeBuds Pro are priced at P7,999 available through the Huawei Store. Those who pre-order the earbuds will receive freebies worth P3,989, which includes a Huawei Band 4 and an entertainment gift package.
