Microsoft introduced a slew of new and upgraded devices at its annual Surface event. Based on its latest releases, it seems like Microsoft is banking on dual screen devices, as evidenced by the unveiling of the Surface Neo and Surface Duo. Other big announcements include tje Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 7, Surface Earbuds, Surface Laptop 3, and Windows 10X.
It’s been a while since Microsoft last made a phone. The Surface Duo is a dual-screen phone with two 5.6-inch displays held together by a 360-degree rotating hinge. It doubles as an 8.3-inch tablet when unfolded. Most notably, this device runs on Android and a Snapdragon 855 processor.
This two-in-one tablet/phone will come out in late 2020.
Another dual-screen device is the Surface Neo, which runs on the new Windows 10X operating system and features two 9-inch displays held together by a sturdy 360-degree hinge. It also comes with accessories such as a magnetic stylus and a magnetic keyboard. With the keyboard placed on one of the screens, the other display turns into what Microsoft calls the WonderBar (similar to Apple’s Touch Bar) which can also function as a trackpad.
The Neo is set for a holiday 2020 release.
Surface Pro X and Surface Pro 7
The Surface Pro X is a 13-inch two-in-one laptop that runs on a Microsoft-custom SQ1 ARM chip with LTE connectivity. Other new features on this Surface is a new dock for the improved Surface Slim pen, which sits on top of the keyboard. It will be available by November 5.
Meanwhile, the Surface Pro 7, set for an October 22 launch, sports Intel’s 10th generation processors, a 12.3-inch display, and both USB-A and C ports. Its base model starts with 128GB storage and 4GB RAM, and can be upgraded to 1TB storage and 16GB RAM.
Microsoft’s true wireless earphones offers up to 24 hours of battery life with its charging case and a dual-array mic. The Surface Earbuds allow users to control their music with customizable gestures on its sides.
According to Microsoft, the $249 Earbuds are set for release “later this year.”
Surface Laptop 3
Two new 13- and 15-inch models of the Surface Laptop 3 are arriving and they are equipped with 10th-gen quad-core Ice Lake processors. Also boosting this laptop’s performance is its Ryzen Surface Edition Processor.
Both laptops are available for pre-order and will sell starting October 22.
Along with all the new hardware Microsoft announced, it also released a software upgrade. Windows 10X isn’t Windows 10’s successor. Instead, it’s a version of Windows 10 that’s more friendly to mobile devices. Windows 10X is made for dual-screen and foldable PCs, including the announced Surface Neo. It aims to increase productivity and creativity across displays with features like improved pen support.
