YouTube to hold interactive year-end event with appearances from BTS and more

YouTube has announced it is wrapping up the year with a 24-hour interactive livestream event called Escape2021. It features trend-based challenges viewers can participate in, as well as appearances from K-pop supergroup BTS and more.

During the stream, viewers must help Lofi Girl “take a well-deserved break from her room and studies,” YouTube said in a press release.

Lofi Girl is a fictional character produced by the record label ChilledCow based on Shizuku Tsukishima of the anime series Whispers of the Heart. Similar to Shizuki, Lofi Girl is depicted as a Japanese schoolgirl streaming lo-fi music while studying.

It has kept millions of people company while they study or relax to lo-fi beats and has since become YouTube’s face of the musical genre.

To help Lofi Girl take a break from the mundane activities in her room, viewers of Escape2021 must use the live chat to respond to polls, answer trivia questions, and get involved in other real-time experiences.

Finishing all the challenges will allow viewers to “unlock an exclusive performance from a surprise musical guest.”

According to a report by The Verge, the challenges are inspired by the video of a melting butter that BTS’ YouTube channel, BangtanTV, uploaded before the band released their single “Butter.”

Fans of the boy group streamed the one-hour teaser video while simultaenously typing comments on the live chat. Two days after it was uploaded on April 26, the video has already gained 12.8 million views.

YouTube is echoing the same BTS livestream in its upcoming event, with a challenge where viewers have to identify what butter sculptures Jin, Suga, RM, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook melted.

In addition to BTS, Escape2021 will feature Doja Cat and many popular YouTubers, including Mark Rober, AyChristeneGames, Muselk and Jelle’s Marble Runs.

Escape2021 is scheduled to go live on Dec. 16 in three chapters—12:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m.—in Eastern time. If you’re watching from the Philippines, you should tune in to the video below at these hours: 1:00 p.m. on Dec. 16, and 1:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on Dec. 17.
