Google announced today, December 9, the lists of games, shows, trending topics, and more that Filipinos searched the most throughout 2021.
Based on the local results, Pinoys have developed a strong interest in play-to-earn games, particularly Axie Infinity, which snagged the top spot on the tech giant’s list of most-searched games for the year.
Axie Infinity’s gameplay involves playing, buying, breeding, and pitting monsters, called Axies, against each other to win crypto rewards, called small love potions, that players can exchange for cash.
The game was launched in March 2018 by three-year-old Vietnamese startup Sky Mavis. Axie Infinity gained massive popularity this year, having earned 2 million daily active users in October, from having just 38,000 players in April.
According to Quartz News, Sky Mavis has already garnered $700 million in revenue this year from in-game transactions—17% of which the developer pockets—and is set to collect $1 billion by year-end.
This growing trend has significantly affected other income-generating games, such as the new free-to-play crypto game Dragonary, which ranks No. 2 on the list.
Completing the Top 5 are NFT roleplaying game CryptoBlades, open-world survival horror game Specimen Zero, and play-to-earn pet raising game My DeFi Pet.

When it comes to the shows Filipinos searched the most this year, Korean dramas continue to ride an all-time high, with Netflix’s dystopian series Squid Game bagging the top spot. It is followed by the romantic comedy True Beauty and the crime drama Vincezo.
Another Korean romantic drama that attracted the attention of Pinoys is Netflix’s Nevertheless, as well as Falling Into You Smile, which talks about the love story of two professional gamers.
