As expected, Apple launched plenty of new hardware at its California Streaming event. The new iPhone 13 lineup was the highlight—and more specifically the iPhone 13 Pro series.
The new Pro models boast faster GPU, improved camera hardware and, the first ProMotion display on an iPhone. “ProMotion” is Apple speak for adaptive refresh rate technology that goes as low as 10Hz and tops out at 120Hz.
The iPhone 13 Pro has 6.1-inch display while the 13 Pro Max comes with a 6.7-inch screen. The notch that houses the 12MP TrueDepth camera is now 20% smaller, while display brightness goes up to 1000 nits for better outdoor legibility.
The Pro models are powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic chip with 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU based on a 5nm process. Apple also claims that these new devices have a better battery life: up to 1.5 hours better on the iPhone 13 Pro and up to 2.5 hours on the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The phones also have a new feature called Smart Data mode, which intelligently saves battery life by automatically shifting to LTE when 5G isn’t needed.
As for the cameras, there’s a new triple-lens system featuring a larger 77mm telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. There’s also a brighter f/1.5 wide camera and an f/1.8 ultrawide shooter.
All three cameras have a Night Mode feature, and both Pro models can now shoot using Apple’s ProRes video codec.
The iPhone 13 Pro series is IP68 water- and dust-resistant and its chassis is made out of stainless steel. The front is Ceramic Shield while the back is matte glass. It comes in Graphite, Gold, Silver, and the all-new Sierra Blue colorway.
