Apple has taken the wraps off its latest products this year during its September 7 (September 8, Philippine time) event in San Francisco, California, including the highly anticipated iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Touted by the tech giant as its “best, most advanced” iPhones ever, the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus shows off new camera systems, the best battery life yet in an iPhone, as well as water and dust resistance. Here are the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus’ seven biggest improvements and upgrades in detail:
1 Dual-lens camera
Take brighter, more detailed photos and videos as the 12-megapixel rear camera of the new iPhones now include optical image stabilization, a larger f/1.8 aperture, and 6-element lens. Confirming the rumor prior to its launch, the bigger iPhone 7 Plus carries Apple’s new dual-lens camera system in which a 12-megapixel telephoto camera is added on top of the standard 12MP wide angle camera. Together, the two cameras offer two times optical zoom and up to 10 times digital zoom for photos.
Not only that, the devices’ cameras also pack sophisticated technology including Machine Learning, which separates the background of the subject from the foreground, and the proprietary Image Signal Processor, which can process over 100 billion operations on a single photo in as fast as 25 milliseconds.
There’s also a new 7MP FaceTime HD camera and an updated Quad-LED True Tome flash that is said to be 50 percent brighter than the one in the iPhone 6s.
2 Better performance
The iPhone 7 and 7s are the first devices to carry the brand new Apple A10 Fusion chip. The A10 Fusion’s CPU has four cores—two of which are high-performance cores that run up to two times faster than the ones in the iPhone 6. The other two are high-efficiency cores capable of running at just one-fifth the power of the high-performance cores. Both phones also include support for up to 25 LTE bands and has LTE Advanced for three times faster data rates at up to 450Mbps.
3 Longer battery life
According to Apple, the newly launched iPhones have the longest battery life ever in an iPhone. The tech company said that the iPhone 7 has up to two hours longer battery life than the iPhone 6s, while the iPhone 7 Plus has one hour longer battery life than the iPhone 6s Plus.
Other products launched during the event are the Apple Watch Series 2, AirPod wireless headphones, and more.
4 No analog headphone jack
Another iPhone 7 rumor that was confirmed during the launch is the removal of the headphone socket on the new Apple smartphone models. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus now come with EarPods with Lightning connector. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack adapter included in the package in case you want to use old headphones and accessories. Both phones don new stereo speakers for a sound that is two times louder than the previous models.
5 New finishes
In addition to the classic silver, gold, and rose gold finishes, Apple introduces two all-new black finishes for the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus: the black and the jet black finishes. The black finish has an anodized matte appearance, while the innovative jet black finish has a deep, high-gloss look.
Of course the new iPhone features a Retina HD display with a wide color gamut for cinema-standard colors, greater color saturation, and industry-best color management.
6 Water- and dust-resistant
Both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus boast of an IP67 rating, which means they are resistant to dust, spills, and splashes, and can be immersed in water to a depth of one meter.
An all-new, advanced, solid-state Home button on the iPhones is designed to be durable and responsive, and working in tandem with the new Taptic Engine to provide more precise and customizable tactile feedback.
7 iOS 10
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus come with the newly released iOS 10. It comes with updates on Messages, improved functions of Siri, new ways to interact with apps, and more uses of the 3D Touch. iOS 10 also features a redesigned Maps, Photos, Apple Music, News apps, and Home app.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available in silver, gold, rose gold, and the new black finish in 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB models, while the new jet black finish will be offered exclusively with only 128GB and 256GB capacities. Prices begin at $649 for the iPhone 7 and $769 for the iPhone 7 Plus. Apple will roll out the two smartphones in more than 25 countries beginning Friday, September 16. However, there are no words yet when will the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus land in the Philippines. Other products launched by the company during the event are the Apple Watch Series 2 and the AirPods.
